How can we make Southbank a more vibrant and connected place – a place with atmosphere, personality, heart and soul for residents, workers, students and visitors?

Southbank is already an amazing place. It is the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct with some of the country’s most established and innovative arts institutions. At any one time, up to 30,000 people can be seated in performance venues. It is estimated that the economic contribution of the arts and cultural sector is valued at $11.4 billion to the state.

Southbank is located a short walk away from the central city, major sporting venues such as the MCG, Rod Laver Arena and AAMI Park and of course, The Tan Track.

Transforming Southbank Boulevard presents an opportunity not only to address a shortage of public space, but to develop Southbank into a vibrant and active place to live, work and play. It has the potential to:

  • bring life to the new public spaces
  • create a Melbourne experience by bringing life to the small-scale in contrast to large-scale buildings and institutions
  • make connections
  • foster urban resilience
  • create flexible spaces for music, theatre and the arts
  • improve the urban forest.
