Shifting traffic to create new public space

As a result of reduced traffic volume on Southbank Boulevard, we are able to create new public space by shifting traffic to the northern side of Southbank Boulevard. Using the southern side of Southbank Boulevard to create new public space is critical because of its optimal solar access – most exposure to sunlight because it faces north. Extensive site analysis, including access and spatial requirements for adjoining properties, underground service locations, geo-technical soil analysis and flood mapping has also assisted to determine the best location for new public space.

Detailed Microsimulation Traffic Modelling (PDF, 1.0 MB) and the preparation of a Draft Functional Layout (PDF, 3.1 MB) was undertaken to prove that current traffic requirements will still be met. Improved public transport infrastructure and dedicated bicycle lanes will also form part of the new road layout. Large intersections such as Southbank Boulevard/City Road and Southbank Boulevard/Sturt Street will have shorter crossing distances and be easier for pedestrians to use. There are proposed changes to current car parking numbers, locations and car parking types (view the Summary of Proposed Parking Changes (DOC, 33KB). Up to 2.5 hectares of public space can be created.
