We recently completed the North Melbourne Heritage Review, the first comprehensive review of heritage in this area since the 1980s. The independent review looked at all properties within the study area and made recommendations to change the heritage category of 119 properties and seek heritage protection for four new individual heritage places. In consultation with Traditional Custodians, a thematic history was developed, capturing North Melbourne’s history.
First surveyed in 1852, the area now known as North Melbourne was known by the Kulin name Yern-da-ville. Today it remains one of our oldest and most cherished neighbourhoods. The area has developed over time with a diverse architectural mix of workers cottages, stately homes and social housing as well as educational, religious, commercial and industrial buildings. Its rich and evolving history has created the varied urban landscape we have today.
The Review identified specific buildings requiring protection as well as researching and documenting North Melbourne’s history and patterns of development.
The North Melbourne Heritage Review is implemented through Amendments C402 (interim controls) and C403 (permanent controls). There are 108 places recommended for interim heritage protection while the permanent controls are progressed.
Amendments C402 and C403 were adopted at the Future Melbourne Committee on 14 April 2022. Read the Future Melbourne Committee 12 April 2022 meeting papers.
