These projects are part of the City of Melbourne’s long-term program to deliver a connected network of protected bike lanes across the municipality. The aim is to improve safety for all road users, no matter how they choose to travel, and support more sustainable and active travel.

In 2023, we consulted with the community on proposed protected bike lanes for Arden Street and Macaulay Road. The consultation focused on lane design, safety outcomes, traffic movement and changes to on-street parking. Feedback from residents, businesses and road users helped inform the final designs.

The projects align with broader planning including the Macaulay Structure Plan, Arden Precinct Structure Plan and Council’s Transport Strategy 2030, which sets out a vision for Melbourne to become Australia’s premier cycling city.

The bike lanes run approximately 1.5 kilometres in each direction on Arden Street and will run 1.4 kilometres in each direction on Macaulay Road, located next to the kerb and separated from traffic by physical kerbs and parking bays.

To create space for the protected lanes, some traffic lanes and parking bays were adjusted. On Arden Street, 41 parking bays were removed and 198 retained. On Macaulay Road, 40 parking bays will be removed and 132 retained.

Once fully delivered, these improvements will better connect the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and Capital City Trail with existing protected bike lanes on Abbotsford Street, strengthening cycling links in Melbourne’s north and west.
