All of the works being undertaken are compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.

We will relocate any existing disability parking as close by as possible.

The kerbs are made from crushed recycled glass mixed with resin to create a Polymer concrete, which is very strong. The product is fully recyclable at end of its life cycle – disused barriers can be recycled into road base.

Extensive consultation was undertaken on the Transport Strategy 2030 over a period of 18 months. We received the most responses we’ve ever had on a single topic. There were 26,000 visits to the Participate Melbourne page, 1300 formal submissions and a further 1500 social media comments captured. The bike lanes identified for fast-tracking are part of our Transport Strategy 2030, which sets out a 10-year roadmap for Melbourne to become a premier cycling city.

EY Sweeney’s analysis of the community engagement reported that the transport experience of Melburnians included people feeling overcrowded on footpaths (54%), overcrowded on public transport (38%) and experiencing unsafe conditions for cyclists (39%).

Cycling received the most submissions (366) with 90 per cent supporting the suggestions in the cycling discussion paper including the need for physically separated cycle ways. The most common response about the experience of cycling in Melbourne was ‘unsafe and intimidating’.

The Transport Strategy 2030 establishes a long-term vision for all city commuters and will see more space for pedestrians, cyclists and greening.

We engaged with the North Melbourne and Kensington communities in 2021 and 2022 to develop neighbourhood priorities.

The feedback told us that people want to be able to walk and ride around the area safely, and that we need to make improvements to the bike and walking infrastructure in Kensington – specifically, the bike lanes on Macaulay Road.

As part of our Transport Strategy, City of Melbourne is delivering a program of protected bike lanes and pedestrian improvements across the municipality by 2030.

On Tuesday 7 June 2022, the Council resolved to pause the further installation of new protected bike lanes in the CBD for 12 months and instead prioritise the delivery key strategic cycling corridors into and out of the city, including Arden Street, Macaulay Road and Royal Parade.
