New protected bike lanes

City of Melbourne is delivering protected bike lanes on Arden Street (works are underway) and proposing to deliver protected bike lanes on Macaulay Road in North Melbourne and Kensington.
These projects are part of our ongoing program to deliver a network of protected bike lanes across the municipality, providing a safer journey for all bike riders and road users. To date, more than 27 kilometres of bike lanes been rolled, resulting in a 22 per cent increase in use.
These projects align with the Macaulay Structure Plan, Arden Precinct Structure Plan and Council’s Transport Strategy 2030 – which was developed with extensive community consultation and sets the vision for Melbourne to become Australia’s premier cycling city.
The lanes will extend 1.5 km in each direction on Arden Street and 1.4 km in each direction on Macaulay Road. They will sit next to the kerb and be separated from traffic by kerbs and parking bays.
To make space for the lanes, some traffic lanes and parking bays will be adjusted or reduced. On Arden Street, 41 parking bays will be removed (198 retained), and on Macaulay Road, 40 bays would be removed (132 retained).
Once complete, the improvements will link the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and Capital City Trail with existing protected lanes on Abbotsford Street.
In 2023, we opened consultation to the broader community and asked them to share their feedback on the proposed projects.
After closely analysing feedback, we’re now in the delivery phase. Works to deliver the Arden Street bike lanes are expected to be completed in mid-December 2025 and works to deliver the Macaulay Road bike lanes are expected to start in financial year 2025/26.
