Follow the Fishermans Bend pilot: Remix Raingardens

October 12, 2022

Can raingardens made from recycled hard waste successfully filter rainwater, manage flooding and sustain plant life?

The latest Emerging Technology Testbed project aims to answer this question. From research to nursery testing, design development and prototyping, each phase of the pilot is designed to understand the opportunities and challenges of upcycling local hard waste in urban raingardens.

After testing and development, a series of raingardens made from layers of locally generated waste materials, such as concrete, organic matter and crushed glass, will be trialled in Fishermans Bend. Data will be collected using a range of sensors to understand how the well the gardens manage water as well as measuring micro-climate, soil and plant health, and community visitation.

This pilot was the winning proposal of the Fishermans Bend Innovation Challenge.
