Sensors help paint a picture of special raingardens

June 28, 2023

Stormwater and sensors are helping us put Remix Raingardens to the test over the next six months.

This Turner Street pilot will be routinely filled with stormwater, exposing plants to the elements and 40 sensors capturing and recording data.

Collecting a variety of data will help us determine how recycled materials can be used in City of Melbourne raingardens.

Our first round of lab tests showed minimal contaminants were removed by the raingardens. This was expected. Often raingardens have an initial “flushing” out period where water removes excess dust and other small particles. The findings were consistent with the nursery tests, and better results are expected after the next lab tests.

The stem length of the plants will also be tracked to monitor growth and changes under the conditions.

We’ll visit the site regularly to observe the gardens and share updates online.
