New sensors for the Grassland Circle

September 7, 2023

Shining a light on activities in this part of the park.

New pedestrian and lux level sensors will be installed in September to capture activity data on activity in the Native Grassland Circle. Sensors will be installed on three temporary poles in the area.

The new sensors include:

  • Farmo Bi-directional Counter: a pedestrian sensor designed for use in outdoor areas. It uses infrared technology to detect a person approaching, counting visitors at a specific location. No personal data is captured by this sensor.
  • Netvox Light Level Sensor: a light sensor to help us understand the different conditions in the park and consider the impacts of light on safety. It will capture information at a variety of locations, including at a pedestrian crossing near the tram track. We will also use this data to compare light levels at the new and old sports grounds. We have already installed five of these sensors in Royal Park North and five will be installed in different locations around the park including Nature Play and Manningham Street playground.

There are signs with QR codes on the poles to enable visitors to learn more about what we’re doing, the technology and view a live data dashboard.
