What data is telling us about Royal Park

July 4, 2023

Sensors are telling a story on how the park is used.

Data captured by sensors in Royal Park is helping us understand how people use the park, which areas are most popular at what times of the day, what playground or exercise equipment is the most loved and even what the temperature is at the busiest times. All this helps inform us in operational and planning activities for the park.

Data insights so far include:

  • in the last 30 days, the average daily use for playground equipment in Nature Play playground was 230 times. At the Manningham Reserve Playground use was 65 times, which was substantially less than warmer weather usage numbers.
  • the most popular playground item is the basket swing in Nature Play playground with about 100 uses per day
  • The busiest seating areas in June include the bench closest to the popular basket swing and the bench close to the wetland in Ross Straw Field.

The ‘Data in the Park program, now extending across four Melbourne parks, recently won ‘Best use of Technology’ award at the regional Parks and Leisure Awards of Excellence in June.
