Review of Heritage Permit Refusal at Heritage Council

December 6, 2019

Fawkner Park is one of Melbourne’s most treasured parks, providing both passive open space and active recreational opportunities for our diverse community and rapidly growing population, in a metropolitan heritage setting.

The use of Fawkner Park is expected to increase in the future. To ensure the park’s ongoing health and sustainability, longstanding issues of poor drainage, poor tree and lawn health, and cycling and pedestrian conflicts near the Pasley Street North entrance will require well-thought-out solutions that reflect the future needs of park users.

Following the heritage permit refusal for the concept plan works, the City Of Melbourne carefully considered the next steps for the Pasley Street North Entrance Improvements project.

At a Council meeting on 24 September 2019, we resolved to request a review of the heritage permit refusal at Heritage Council. This followed a lengthy evaluation of alternative options, including re-designing the entrance and not progressing the project at this time.

A hearing to review the heritage permit refusal is scheduled at Heritage Council in March 2020.
