Kensington Community Garden is a wonderful community space where residents of Kensington come together to grow produce, learn about horticulture and gardening, and connect with neighbours.

The garden had 52 plots, most of which were cared for by the same members for many years. We heard from many residents who would love to be part of the garden but could not be due to long waiting lists. More than 188 people told us they would like the chance to use the garden.

To improve access, Council held consultation sessions with community members.

Together, we explored options such as:

  • Increasing access and reducing wait times.
  • Reducing the size of garden plots so more people can participate.
  • Introducing principles of active gardening to ensure the garden is thriving and well maintained.
  • Supporting the community to self-manage the garden into the future.
  • Introduction of shared gardening.

These sessions led to a new layout of the garden plots and a new management plan for community use of the garden.

Council undertook a process to create a new community committee who will manage the garden into the future. We thank the community members who came together and volunteered their time to be part of the committee and contributed to great conversations.

As many garden beds required maintenance and renewal, Kensington Community Garden was closed in August 2025. A number of garden beds had deteriorated and had to be replaced. These works are now complete.

As of April 2026, Kensington Community Garden will be managed by the Kensington Community Garden Committee.

The garden now offers 90 plots for the community to access and enjoy.
