Accessible works to begin on William and Franklin streets

January 31, 2025

Work will soon begin at the William Street end of Franklin Street to build an accessible bus stop and protected bike path.

The work is being led by City of Melbourne with Yarra Trams and CitiPower.

To safely carry out these works, the eastbound lane between William and Queen streets will close to traffic from Monday 3 February. This follows the temporary re-opening of the lane in December to support access to Queen Victoria Market during the busy festive season.

When

Works will be carried out 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, from the first week of February until mid-year. Some night-work will also be needed by Yarra Trams and CitiPower to relocate essential infrastructure.

What’s happening

Works include:

  • Yarra Trams and CitiPower will relocate light poles, tram infrastructure and traffic lights to suit the new configuration.
  • Upgrading the current bus stop, footpath and bike lane.

What are the impacts

Careful planning and traffic management will mean disruption is kept to a minimum. However, as with any road project, there could be some traffic delays and detours while works are underway. For your safety, please follow signage and instructions from traffic controllers. Please note the following:

  • Access to nearby businesses, residential properties and the market, will be maintained at all times.
  • Vehicles will not be able to travel eastbound to Queen Street from William Street. The left turn into Franklin Street will be closed to vehicles.
  • The existing bus lane will be sectioned off as the work site and the bus stop will be temporarily relocated to the corner of William and A’Beckett streets during the works.
  • The existing bike lane and pedestrian footpath will be closed during construction. An alternative footpath will be built around the site. To ensure safety, cyclists must walk their bikes on the footpath. Please follow the signage on site.

Works completion

We’re expecting works to be completed by mid-year. To improve access, we will work with Yarra Trams and the Department of Transport to explore the possibility of temporarily allowing eastbound traffic on Franklin Street as soon as practical.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation and patience while we carry out these important safety works.
