Tree removal on Franklin Street and Queen Street roundabout

February 15, 2024

To prepare for construction of the Gurrowa Place development, the roundabout at the corner of Franklin Street and Queen Street will be removed. As part of this work, the first stage of planned tree removals from the roundabout will take place at the end of February.

This will make room for underground infrastructure works to be carried out as part of the CitiPower cable relocation, before the roundabout is removed. The broader Franklin Street transformation project will retain as many trees as possible and new ones will also be planted in line with the Urban Forest Strategy.

Transforming the Queen Victoria Market open-air car park into 1.8 hectares of open space will provide an opportunity for more trees to be planted also.

The roundabout’s removal and reconfiguration of the intersection follows closing of sections of Queen and Franklin streets in 2020. This was part of the 2014 State Agreement and a commitment under the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Master Plan.

More information on Franklin Street and market precinct works will be provided to residents before they start.
