Support for communities impacted by the Victorian Government high-rise redevelopment

October 30, 2023

On 20 September 2023, the Victorian Government announced its Housing Statement that includes reforms around five themes: good decisions made faster, cheaper housing close to where you work, protecting renters’ rights, more social housing and a long-term housing plan. Part of the statement includes committing to retiring all older high-rise towers across Melbourne. Among the first towers proposed for redevelopment are 33 Alfred Street in North Melbourne, as well as 141 Nicholson Street and 20 Elgin Street in Carlton.

We understand that this news was unexpected. We’ve heard that you have concerns and that you are awaiting a response to some questions.

City of Melbourne stands to support our communities who live in public housing towers and is meeting with residents, support agencies and government representatives to better understand the process, what this means for the community, and how the community feels about this announcement.

In the meantime, to learn more about the high-rise redevelopment project, access information in languages other than English and stay updated, visit the Homes Victoria website and sign-up for project updates. Homes Victoria can be contacted directly by calling 1800 716 866 or emailing enquiries@homes.vic.gov.au

Residents who have been contacted by Homes Victoria to start their relocation process can have an interpreter, as well as friends or family members and other support services join them during the relocation conversation. You may also have the meeting in-person, at a location and time that is suitable for you.
