Neighbourhood conversations and Community Champions consultation summaries available

December 6, 2023

We have completed two more phases of the Power Melbourne community engagement journey!

Neighbourhood Conversations

The most recent phase focused on conversations with neighbourhoods which had been identified as having areas of high technical potential to install a battery. We asked what benefits the local community would like to see, ideas for specific locations, and visual design preferences. For instance, many respondents want Council to make a prominent feature of the batteries as an innovative renewable technology project. We also heard that most respondents value open green space, and would prefer batteries to be installed on underused land with low visual impact rather than in parks. Read the summary.

Community Champions

We also wrapped up the Fast Tracking Neighbourhood Batteries Community Champions program. Through a series of deep dive workshops and discussions, Champions identified a wide range of opportunities to continue the conversation and build community interest. Champions also identified challenges for Councils to consider and plan for such as engaging community members who do not have solar. Read the summary.

What happens next?

Our first batteries will be installed in 2024 at Library at the Dock, Boyd Community Hub and Council House. Updates about the installation of these will be shared via Participate Melbourne.
