Future Melbourne Committee meeting 15 September

September 10, 2020

We are ready to make a decision on the proposal to make the new Market Street Park a smoke-free area.

On Tuesday 15 September, the Future Melbourne Committee will decide whether to endorse the proposed smoke-free area in Market Street.

Following community consultation in July and August of 2020 we have developed a report that outlines the findings on our proposal to make the new Market Street Park a smoke-free area. The proposed smoke-free area would run between Collins Street and Flinders Lane, within the new park and adjacent footpaths. The Future Melbourne Committee will use the report to shape their decision.

Key findings in the report include:

  • 95 per cent of individual respondents were in support of the new park becoming smoke-free, two per cent were neutral and only three per cent opposed.
  • 100 per cent of businesses who provided feedback are in support of the new park becoming smoke-free.
  • There is relatively low opposition from smokers, with 64 per cent of smokers either having a positive or neutral attitude to the smoke-free area proposal.

Tuesday’s meeting will commence at 5.30pm at Melbourne Town Hall.
