The conversation

In May and June 2024, we asked the community to provide their view on water security, the use of alternative water and their priorities for healthy green spaces – parks and gardens - across the city.

Residents and visitors value green spaces in the City of Melbourne. Enhancing green spaces is a priority in most neighbourhoods across the municipality.

Water is essential in keeping our green spaces healthy. However, climate change and population growth are putting pressure on greater Melbourne’s water supply. During droughts, alternative water sources such as rainwater, stormwater and recycled water can improve how well we maintain these open spaces.

Gathering insights

Between 17 May 2024 and 21 July 2024, we asked the community to provide feedback through an online survey on Participate Melbourne.

We provided a project overview including details about why we need to plan for water security, the work already underway and alternative (non-drinking) water sources available to City of Melbourne.

Additionally, we held two community events to provide further information about water security. These included:

  • A tour of the Fitzroy Gardens Stormwater Harvesting Project on Saturday 1 June with 6 participants.
  • A water wise kids' session at Narrm Ngarrgu Library held on Tuesday 4 June with 18 children and their parents/guardians.
