The conversation

We sought feedback from park users on a draft concept plan for Alexandra Gardens, with a focus on improvements to accessibility, safety and amenity.

Gathering insights

An online survey was hosted on Participate Melbourne from Friday 16 February to Monday 25 March, 2024.

We promoted the opportunity to provide feedback through signage in the gardens with QR codes, and by contacting interested stakeholders and organisations active in the precinct.

What we heard

The survey results showed support for:

  • 91% of respondents supported the pedestrian/cycling crossover to Boathouse Drive.
  • 86% of respondents supported the proposed adjustments to the pedestrian route.
  • 70% of respondents supported the proposed adjustments to the cycling route.

Issues and concerns:

  • Safety was the biggest concern and topic of this discussion. Across multiple questions, there was support for separating transport modes, such as cyclists from pedestrians; and pedestrians and cyclists from rowers transporting boats.
  • The most commonly discussed issue was the realignment of the cycle route to behind the rowing boat sheds and the need to make it a safe route.
  • Users of the rowing precinct highlighted their requirements, in particular focusing on parking needs to enable access for early morning training, as well as the efficient parking of trailers.

Suggestions

The addition of native trees that provide shade for users was the most popular request, followed by more seats and drinking fountains.

Impact

Council is making changes and additions to the concept plans based on feedback received during the engagement.

Next steps

The final Alexandra Gardens Concept Plan will be presented for endorsement to the Future Melbourne Committee on 23 July 2024.

If endorsed, the project will progress through a detailed design process in the 2024-25 financial year, with an anticipated construction in 2025-26.
