We know the Alexandra Gardens and the riverfront are popular, which is why we are upgrading them to be more usable and accessible for walking, cycling and recreation.
The proposed changes will make the gardens safer for everyone and include improving the paths, traffic circulation and upgraded lighting. These align with the recommendations of our 2019 Domain Parklands Master Plan.
Feedback on the Alexandra Gardens concept plan will help us improve the area for the whole community.
Proposed improvements
The proposed improvements include:
- new and upgraded accessible pathways along the river frontage from Alexandra Avenue to Princes Bridge
- traffic management improvements to Boathouse Drive, including introducing a 20km/h speed limit, a safer crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists at the east end of Boathouse Drive and a re-alignment of the current cycling route from the river front to the rear of the boathouse area
- new drop off / pick up zone on Boathouse Drive adjacent to the boathouse area
- amended current permit parking arrangements at the rear of the boathouse area to accommodate boat trailer parking and improve safety for vehicle circulation
- new tree and garden bed planting
- improved and new lighting
- general improvements including additional park furniture and new wayfinding and interpretative signage.
Proposed vehicle parking changes:
- Delivering these improvements will require minor changes to both the public parking arrangements on Boathouse Drive and the permit parking spaces at the rear of the boathouse area.
- To create the drop off/pick up zone on Boathouse Drive it is proposed that five of the current three-hour parking spaces are converted to short term parking for pick-up and drop off purposes. The existing vendor permit space would be relocated further east along Boathouse Drive, and the two disabled parking bays may also need to be relocated.
- At the rear of the boathouses it is proposed to re-allocate 13 of the permit parking spaces to boat trailer parking use and remove a further three permit parking spaces to improve vehicle circulation safety in this area.
- Exact numbers and locations of vehicle parking changes will be finalised following the community engagement and through detailed design.
We are particularly seeking community feedback on:
- details of the new paths, traffic management proposals, relocation for disabled parking bays, and planting opportunities
- the location of other general park improvement proposals in the concept plan.
