New look Kensington Community Recreation Centre

September 11, 2020

We have been working through community feedback to help finalise designs for the new Kensington Community Recreation Centre.

In response to community feedback, plans for the new centre now include:

  • An expanded swimming pool to enable more lanes for swimming and ramp access.
  • An indoor water play area available all year round.
  • An increased number of multi-purpose courts with features to support range of sports and user needs.
  • An expanded gym, five times the size of the current offering.
  • Multipurpose rooms to cater to wide range of activities and community needs.

A key change we are considering is re-orientating the main entrance from Kensington Road, as proposed in Phase 2 consultation, to face JJ Holland Park instead. This would enable the café to be located parkside, and also help address safety concerns raised by some community members about the main entrance facing out onto Kensington Road.

Further investigations are taking place on the feasibility of outdoor water play and warm water facility.

The updated plans for the new centre are expected to be considered at a Future Melbourne Committee meeting later this year. We will keep you informed of the date of this when it is confirmed.
