Plans to transform Munro Library and Community Hub revealed

August 18, 2022

At the Future Melbourne Committee meeting on Tuesday 2 August 2022, Councillors considered and approved the schematic designs for the Munro Library and Community Hub.

The library and community hub will occupy three storeys of the $500 million Munro development in the heart of the market precinct.

See the Future Melbourne Committee meeting agenda or watch the livestreamed meeting.

More than just a place for gathering, studying and knowledge, the proposed designs raise the bar for public libraries in Australia.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to provide your feedback on the design via the online survey and by sharing your thoughts with City of Melbourne librarians. This design reflects your vision, and we hope you love it. Read more about the feedback and how it has been incorporated into the design.

The 3100 m2 space will feature:

  • A new library branch across three levels, featuring a dedicated children’s library.
  • A 300 m2 Family Services Centre, which will provide maternal health consulting rooms, a parent room, a playgroup room and secure outdoor play area.
  • A community rooftop terrace overlooking the market precinct for outdoor reading and activities.
  • A creative makers’ space with access to 3D printers, laser cutters, paint booths and sewing machines.
  • Two dedicated sound studios for podcast and audio recording.
  • A communal study and events space.
  • Bookable community meeting rooms.
  • Specifically curated artworks.
