The park is named in recognition of Ronald James Barassi Senior, who played as a rover for the Melbourne Football Club from 1936 to 1940.

Sporting activities played in a formal capacity are required to meet industry standards for competition and training.

Ron Barassi Snr Park meets the industry standard required to play a range of competitions including soccer, Junior Aussie Rules, Touch Rugby and AFL 9’s.

Sports lighting standards prescribe the level of illuminance required to train at night. At Ron Barassi Snr Park the lighting level is up to 100 lux which meets the standard to conduct training for rugby, Aussie Rules Football and soccer. Touch rugby competitions can also be played under lights.

The park does not have a cricket wicket built in. It can accommodate modified forms of cricket such as Milo T20 blast, which uses a rubber ball and does not require a hard wicket.

The time of year also determines which sports can be played, eg. summer or winter.

The pavilion is a purpose-built, public facility to service sports use. It includes canteen facilities, change rooms, umpires rooms, storage rooms and a social room. The pavilion is gender neutral and accessible by people of all abilities. The pavilion is primarily used to cater for use associated with activity taking place on the ground or those related to recreation such as club meetings or fundraisers.

The social room can accommodate low impact, small group recreation activities such as yoga or pilates.

Birthday parties or functions are private events and would need consideration given to manage related cleaning, waste disposal, security and resourcing. These would come at an additional cost to the hirer, to maintain the standard required for other regular community users. It is therefore not suitable for private celebrations.

Thank you for your interest. The City Of Melbourne will work closely with you and other interest parties to help facilitate the formation of a local sports club. This will include mentorship and guidance on best practice, on the formation of a community sporting group.

There are a number of community clubs operating currently in the municipality, which we will call upon to share their experience and knowledge with you if required.

We will also connect you with peak industry bodies such as State Sporting Associations to help you with this process.

A booking can be made by obtaining a permit for formal sports use. This is done through a Casual sports permit for one-off uses. A seasonal permit grants permission to a club or group based at the facility for a season (e.g. winter or summer).

There is also a Tour Operator Licence system as designated by the state government, for commercial operators on Crown Land. Further information is available on Councils’ website.

Fees apply for Casual and Seasonal permit holders as approved by Council for each budget cycle. These are available via Sports ground use and permits, along with those that apply to Tour Operator Licensed operators, as determined by the State Government.

Any recreational activity that does not require a marked field or infrastructure such as goals is considered ‘passive recreation’ and does not require a permit. This includes activities that are limited to a small number of participants, and generally does not include club activities.

If there is a permitted activity on the ground, passive use needs to ensure (both) can continue safely, without risk to players and any other park users. Permit holders have priority use of the ground.
