The City of Melbourne is committed to protecting its rich cultural heritage as the city grows and changes.
The City of Melbourne has recently completed the South Yarra Heritage Review (August 2022), the most thorough and comprehensive review of heritage in South Yarra in the municipality of Melbourne since 1985. The independent review was undertaken by GML Heritage Consultants and was largely focused on previously under-protected interwar and post war places. The review included in-depth research into the history of the buildings, streets and parks of South Yarra. Project officers conducted extensive community engagement in 2021.
The South Yarra Heritage Review is the latest study in a rolling program of heritage reviews to ensure we have up-to-date knowledge to protect the city’s valued places. From 10 August to 21 September 2020 we asked the community to share their knowledge of South Yarra to help inform our heritage review. Read more about the community consultation and see the community map.
The South Yarra Heritage Review was endorsed at the Future Melbourne Committee on 8 November 2022, with authorisation to progress Amendments C425 and C426. Read the Future Melbourne Committee 8 November 2022 - City of Melbourne meeting papers.
Amendment C425 (interim controls) and Amendment C426 (permanent control) will implement the recommendations of the South Yarra Heritage Review August 2022. Interim controls (C425) are used to protect vulnerable heritage places whilst the amendment for permanent controls (C426) progresses. Currently amendment C425 is with the Planning Minister awaiting a decision. C426 received authorisation (with conditions) to proceed on February 22 2023.
Exhibition opened 14 March 2023 to 24 April 2023. You can read more about the Amendment C426 (Permanent Controls) and Amendment C425 (Interim controls).
We ran information sessions and a Heritage Walking Tour as part of Exhibition.
Submissions closed Monday 24 April.
