The City of Melbourne is committed to protecting its rich cultural heritage as the city grows and changes.

The City of Melbourne completed the South Yarra Heritage Review in August 2022 - the most thorough and comprehensive review of heritage in South Yarra in the municipality of Melbourne since 1985. The independent review was undertaken by GML Heritage Consultants and was largely focused on previously under-protected interwar and post war places. The review included in-depth research into the history of the buildings, streets and parks of South Yarra. Project officers conducted extensive community engagement in 2021.

The South Yarra Heritage Review is part of City of Melbourne's rolling program of heritage reviews to ensure we have up-to-date knowledge to protect the city’s valued places. From 10 August to 21 September 2020 we asked the community to share their knowledge of South Yarra to help inform our heritage review. Amendment C425 (interim controls) and Amendment C426 (permanent controls) will implement the recommendations of the South Yarra Heritage Review August 2022. The South Yarra Heritage Review was endorsed at the Future Melbourne Committee on 8 November 2022, with authorisation to progress Amendments C425 and C426.

Amendment C425 (interims) were gazetted on 8 June 2023. Exhibition for C426 (permanents) ran from 13 March to 24 April 2023. Management's responses to submissions were considered by the Future Melbourne Committee (FMC) on 19 September 2023.

Follow Amendment C426 (Permanent controls) for the latest updates.
