We are proposing to expand the green space along Roden Street, increasing the number of trees, introducing biodiverse garden beds and reducing paving and road asphalt. This will create a more open and functional green space for the local community to enjoy.

The community was provided with the Greening Roden Street proposal, project specific Frequently Asked Questions and a Tree Removal for Pest and Disease fact sheet.

Community feedback was sought on the Greening Roden Street proposal presented.

What we heard

Ninety-one per cent of people who responded supported the Greening Roden Street proposal, showing either strong (82 per cent) or mild (9 per cent) support. The feedback received included:
  • Green space

Support of increasing the amount of green space for aesthetic, livabilty, biodiversity and climate benefits

  • Parking

Parking loss to be balanced with future development in the area

  • Access

Maintaining access from the street to people's homes

  • Traffic

Traffic calming required within the King Street end of Roden Street

Examples of what we heard

  • A lot of the existing trees are tired and need replacing. New plants and trees will enhance the ambiance of the area and increase bird life. Extra paths will also be helpful.

  • As a Roden Street resident it currently feels very "industrial" (particularly with the constant construction over the last couple of years) so it would be great to see more green space to balance out the new multi-storey buildings.

  • West Melbourne doesn't have enough green space, making it hot in summer. Also, there is so much traffic we need plants to help improve the air quality.

  • The draft concept is a good start but could be materially enhanced through further consideration of paving, plans for leaf litter management / flood protection, better traffic management, improved refuse management, better connectivity of the proposed pathways and signage to instruct dog owners to clean up after their dogs.

  • I feel it'll make better use of the land. Create a more pedestrian and pet friendly environment, which encourages outdoor use which can improve safety and crime. It's will also be more aesthetically pleasing than it is currently.
