Future Melbourne 2026 will be a long-term strategic plan to guide city development and activity from 2016 until 2026. This will be the second time that Council has developed a Future Melbourne plan.

The first plan was developed from 2007-2008. During this time, approximately 15,000 individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups from across Melbourne and the globe participated in the development of the plan. The plan developed a vision for Melbourne as a bold, inspirational and sustainable global city, supported by six high level goals: to build a city for people, a creative city, a prosperous city, a knowledge city, an eco-city and a connected city.

Much has been achieved to deliver on the first Future Melbourne plan. You can read a summary of each Future Melbourne 2008 goal by selecting a tile below or read more in the full report:

In the seven years since the first plan, Melbourne has experienced a rapid and transformational change. That is why we’re now calling on all city users and members of our community to develop a new plan to ensure Melbourne’s legacy as a liveable and competitive city over the coming decade.

People have come to Melbourne in growing numbers and diversity, creating new ways of living, learning and conducting business. The rapid innovation and adoption of new technologies has uncovered opportunities, brought disruption and shaped new expectations. Although in 2015 Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city, it is subject to global trends and impacts that affect all cities such as intense urbanisation, climate change, shifting economies and population ageing.
